This piece depicts one of the Maori, the indigenous Polynesian people inhabiting New Zealand. The “tattoo” that is shown on his face is known as Tā moko, a traditional form of permanent marking amongst the Maori. These Tā moko markings tell of the rank and status of a person in traditional Maori culture.
