HANS VAN DEN
BERKMORTEL
The Dutch painter and photographer Hans van den Berkmortel is self tauch in two disciplines.
His photography and his painting complete eachother and influence these processes, but they are also standing alone with their own carachters
The photo’s of Hans van den Berkmortel are difficult to catch within one theme. Sometimes they are images shot around the corner, while others were made in exotic places during his intens travelings all around the world.
These images vary from impressionistic landscapes till urban landscapes full of expression.
His background as a painter can be recognised in the almost abstract compositions and atmosphere while these images also telling background stories and create human emotions; notorious hiphoppers from the Bronx, French cyclists, Indian slums, Irish horse men and Ducth farners…they are all there “and everything is true”
Depending on the light, the colours and composition he searches and waits for that split second in which normal becomes unique. That exquisited moment in which the world becomes real, sometimes in her uglyness, but always atractive and true.
The binding nature is the dynamic and directness of his photo’s. Never staged and without false expectations. A characterization which also applies to the personality of Hans van den Berkmortel.
That is exactly the reason why his work is so prosperous, it is a pure representation of himself as a benchmarket.
